Connected air conditioning: why yours may not be controllable at home
Connected and controllable-at-home are two different things. The difference comes down to one line on your quote, and it cannot be fixed after installation.
You are having air conditioning installed, the quote mentions a connectivity option, and the installer confirms remote heating and cooling control. It all sounds right. And yet there is one question worth asking before you sign.
"Connected" does not mean "controllable at home"
On most recent air conditioners, the optional WiFi module works only through the manufacturer's cloud. Your command leaves your phone, travels up to a server, then comes back down to a unit that is three metres away from you.
Across several major brands, the latest-generation modules have removed the local access that earlier models offered. The programming interface still exists, but it is reserved for the manufacturer and its partners.
This is not malice, it is an industrial choice — and it has very concrete consequences.
Four consequences nobody mentions
- No internet, no control. Your router goes down and the unit is back to being a wall remote.
- The service can close. A server switched off, an app no longer updated, and a perfectly working machine loses its connected features. It has already happened with other household equipment.
- It cannot be combined with anything else. Have solar panels? You will not be able to start the air conditioning when production passes a threshold: your home automation has no access to the unit.
- Your habits go elsewhere. Heating and cooling hours describe when you are in, when you are away, and how you live.
The question to ask before signing
One question is enough, and it changes everything:
"The connectivity option on my quote — what is the exact module reference?"
Write the answer down. The reference determines whether your installation stays open or not, and it is information the installer has, even if he does not know what it implies. That is not his job: he installs and commissions, he does not do home automation.
Now is the right moment. Before installation, every option is still open. Afterwards, changing the module means opening up units that are under warranty.
What does work
Manufacturers fit their units with an internal communication port — the one their own accessories use. It is designed for this, it is accessible, and it allows both reading the unit's state and sending it setpoints.
Connecting to it gives fully local control: the air conditioning appears in your home automation with its temperature, its mode and its setpoints. It works without internet, and the original controller keeps command of the safety cut-outs, defrost cycles and timers. You send it instructions; you never replace it.
Two points are worth knowing:
- On a multi-split, each indoor unit has its own port. Three indoor units, three connections — the outdoor unit does not centralise control.
- The connector has changed on recent generations of some ranges. Hardware that suits a 2019 model will not necessarily fit a 2024 one.
Why it is worth it
Reversible air conditioning is one of the largest electrical loads in a house. Making it locally controllable means being able to run it when your solar production is there, switch it off room by room according to occupancy, and track its real consumption instead of guessing.
It is exactly the same logic as a solar diverter for hot water, or reading your inverter locally: your equipment works for you, at your place, without depending on a server.
